lebanon_2Sectarian tensions are running high in Beirut in the wake of assassination of Lebanon’s Industry Minister Pierre Gemayel, hailing from the minority Christian community. Gemayel, 34, was the son of Amin Gemayel, a former Prime Minister of Lebanon. He suspects Syria behind the gruesome murder. Pierre Gemayel’s uncle Bashir Gemayel, who was the President of Lebanon, was also assassinated in 1982. The family was in the forefront of the 15-year civil war which ended in 1990. Syria was believed to be the murderer of President Bashir Gemayel.

Lebanon has already threatened to emerge as a battleground between the pro-U.S. Forces and Hizbollah. The Hizbollah, an extremist Muslim organization, close to Syria and Iran said the assassination was aimed at pushing Lebanon back to civil war. Iran too has described the killing as a ‘criminal act’. Syria, at the receiving end, has described the murder a ‘heinous terrorist act’.

pierre-gemayel_2A vehicle had rammed into the car of the victim and gunmen sprayed bullets at the stranded car from point blank range. The killing of Pierre Gemayel, known critic of Syria, threatens to undermine the budding accommodation of Syria in the Middle East’s mainstream diplomacy to ease tensions, especially in Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

The US got an excuse to coerce Syria out of Lebanon following the killing of Lebanese ex-leader Rafik al-Hariri who was known for his anti-Syria voice.

With Syrian troops inside Lebanon, Israel would not have been able to lead an attack against Hezbolla the way it did earlier this year following the kidnapping of two of its soldiers.

Lebanon in a state of civil war serves the American-Zionist agenda right. Now the US and Israel have what they wanted all the time - an unstable Lebanon without Syrian troops inside.

After the Lebanese Civil War (1975- 1990) the country had shattered into pieces however, there were pervasive efforts to restore the financial system and re-erect national infrastructure with the first positive results becoming palpable in recent years. But due to this on going strife in the country, great damage to the civilian infrastructure and massive population displacement has taken place. Hence, they should mull over the living conditions of Darfur and Iraq before taking any further steps.

Pooja:

Do you know what you are talking? In the overwhelmingly Muslim populated Lebanon, the French-Christian militia leader Michel Aun ruled Lebanon with an iron fist. It was only logical that he be ousted and a popular regime took over. That came in the way of the Syria-Iran-backed government taking over the country’s control.

The Christian north enjoyed all the freedom and were generally free from radical Islamic impositions upon them. Lebanon’s golden period was between 90 and 2005 after which things started to get back to the old ways.

>> But due to this on going strife in the country, great damage to the civilian infrastructure and massive population displacement has taken place. Hence, they should mull over the living conditions of Darfur and Iraq before taking any further steps.

What’s that? How is it relevant to the context? Could you kindly explain?

Certainly, US has got and excuse, however, it was not looking for one and don’t even need it, with other issues already tactically put on the burner and Israel enjoying its muscle power.

Now Israel can target Hezbolla with a fresh strategy. Doesn’t matter how hard Syria tries, it won’t be able break Lebanon’s identity. The communion between Christians (who made a grave mistake by forming an alliance with Israel) and Muslims too has never shown any balance. Assassination of Pierre Gemayel has certainly drifted Lebanon towards another civil war .
