Romance with Kashmir is Over

romance with kashmir is overIt was the movie “Lion of the Desert” on the life of legendary Libyan freedom fighter Omar Mukhtar which ignited the simmering fire in the hearts of Kashmiris in 1989. The mighty Communist USSR was too disintegrating into several nations. The technological innovation made it possible to view those historical moments in respect to the grand collapse of the USSR. The ground was fertile for re-raising the demand of Independence of Kashmir. “We want Azadi (Independence)” rent the air of Srinagar and other urban centres in the Kashmir Valley.

After one year, this ‘Lost Rebellion’ will be two decade old. Meanwhile enough water has fallen in the Jhelum river. The West is no longer interested in propping up the struggle of Kashmiris in the post 9/11 world. Pakistan is too witnessing the historical moments of revival of democracy for the betterment of the country. Pakistan, the financier and moral booster, besides providing base to the infiltrators and mercenaries in the name of Islam, has preferred to adopt a lukewarm attitude on the vexed Kashmir issue. A few days ago, Zardari, the PM aspirant told a new channel that the Kashmir issue could be shelved for the time being. He expressed the priority of the new Pakistani rulers. No murmur was heard in Pakistan over this blunt about-turn of Pakistani ruling elite on the issue of Kashmir which was played by successive rulers to arouse the sentiments of Pakistanis.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) stands divided. One faction is headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq while the other one is being led by the hardliner octogenarian separatist leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami SAS Geelani. It is believed that the Hurriyat has not received funds from Pakistan for the last three months. It seems that the romance of Pakistan with Kashmir is over. On the other hand, the Kashmiris in the valley are reaping the spending spree of the middle-class Indians who flock to the Valley.

The recent unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo, another Muslim majority country on the map of the world, notwithstanding the opposition by Russia is not cutting any ice with the Kashmiris whose separatist tendencies are meeting the hostile reception everywhere in the world.

I do agree with you. I think it has happened for the first time that the issue of Kashmir is not even in debate in Pakistani Politics. Politicians and media are talking about Democracy. It is good sign from Indian point of view that Pakistan is not in mood to discuss Kashmir at this point of time. People know that politicians always used the name of Kashmir just to stay in power and news in Pakistan but now its old story. As an Indian, I want the Indian government to take some serious diplomatic step to solve the matter now. This is the best time to ask Pakistan to think positive because Pakistani people are fighting for democracy and Pakistani military is playing no role in government formation. Its good sign of course.

Yes and I want to add some more points in Pratyush's comment that Pakistan’s new Army Chief, General Ashfaq Kayani is more than 10 year younger than Musharraf, a generation gap. I believe the generation gap works in Pakistan too and younger generation thinks differently than elders. General Kayani may have a less irrational, less belligerent outlook towards India. India should invite him officially and try to improve the relation between military of both countries. chief.

Pakistan cannot forget Kashmir because we care about Kashimiri people's right and atrocities of Indian army in Kashmir. The new government in Pakistan will definitely raise the issue.

Pakistan’s first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan had said in 1950 when he had visit to the USA that culturally… 80% of Kashmir population are Muslims and in fact an integral part of Pakistan.

Just remember Musharraf's overtly anti-Indian 12 January 2002 speech. He had said - 'Kashmir runs in our blood. No Pakistani can afford to sever links with Kashmir… We will continue to extend our moral, political and diplomatic support to Kashmiris. We will never budge from our principle stand on Kashmir. Kashmir has to be resolved through dialogue in accordance with the wishes of the people of Pakistan and in accordance with the UN resolutions.

This is voice of Pakistan, nothing is over.

If India believe in saying Kashmir is an integral part of its territory, we Pakistanis also claim that Kashmir is an integral part of our own domestic agenda and national politics.

History repeats itself and this is true. During 80s, Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest Prime Minister of India and Benazir Bhutto was ruling as the youngest Prime Minister in Pakistan. Now, the political scene in both countries has been changed with one great similarity. Rajiv Gandhi and Benazir Bhutto sacrificed their lives because of terrorism. In India, Sonia Gandhi, widow of Rajiv Gandhi, has the controlling power of UPA government and in Pakistan, Zardari, widower of Begum Bhutto, may be the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Leaders sitting in government have a disbelief that they can win over the common people by appearing as the champion of Kashmir cause. The opposition parties believe in utilizing government's non-seriousness to destabilise the government. for the government in Islamabad, Kashmir issue is single answer to all the problem. It always uses the national media to show what 'good work' they have done for Kashmiri people. Even Benazir was giving pro-Kashmiri anti-Indian speech just before her death in the blast or shootout. No government can survive with playing with 'Kashmir Issue' in Pakistan and Zardari will take the same route for sure.

I just forgot to add one more historical speech between speeches of Liyaqat Khan and Musharraf. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto thundered at the UN Security Council on the night of 22-23 September 1965 and said -"The people of Jammu and Kashmir are part of the people of Pakistan in blood, in flesh, in life, in culture, in geography, in history, in every form. We will wage a war for a thousand years, a war of defence."

The 1965 war was going on at that time.

Mr. Zafar from Pakistan.. may I ask what do you want to portray here by quoting the speeches of leaders of three generations in Pakistan? Did you have any hidden agenda?

In Pakistan, any top leader sitting in opposition accuses the government to make a deal or sellout of Kashmir when the media reports about the normalisation India-Pakistan relationship. When Rajiv Gandhi came Pakistan in 1989, Nawaz Sharif blamed Benazir of compromising on Kashmir. The similar thing happened when Nawaz Sharif met IK Gujral in 1998, Benazir blamed Nawaz of taking a soft approach on Kashmir. This is why Musharraf never saw his softer approach on Kashmir because he didn't want to give others any chance to target him on Kashmir issue.

Religious parties, more than political leaders, have used the Kashmir issue in Pakistani politics. After Independence, the religious parties were in no favor of involvement in Kashmir. Maulana Abul Ala Maududi, who was the founder of the Jamaat-e-Islami, had even opposed Pakistani's role in armed conflict in Kashmir and said Islam did not allow a proxy war. But later, the scenario was changed and Kashmir became core issue. Then, political parties grabbed the Kashmir issue and used as main instrument to stay in power. Zulfikar Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto and Parvez Musharraf played the card dangerously. Its hard to say its over now.

The new government in Pakistan may change the history by removing the Kashmir issue from Pakistani politics and place the development and democracy as center of debate. It will be good for Pakistan.

Milind you said it right, With Kashmir issue, the religious parties are always ready to destabilise any government in Pakistan, I remembered, Jamaat's call for strike when Vajpayee went to Lahore and blamed Nawaz of humiliating himself in front of Vajpayee.

It is ironic how we sitting in our comfortable homes so freely claim that Kashmir belong to Pakistan or India. I have seen what this 50 year old war has done to the Kashmiris first hand, I have also seen billions of dollars going into fighting a war with no cause just an ego issue, while the masses in both countries suffer fom lack of food, clothes, proper housing and most of all addequate education.

No party and leader can survive in national politics in Pakistan without using the issue of Kashmiri people's rights. Who cares of development and economic growth when people cast their vote in the name of Islam.

As usual, the discussion on the Kashmir issue has run on the old lines with the pre-set mindset on the part of both sides. Emotions have superseded the logic and rational point of view. However, one fact remains that Kashmiris stand cheated in the run. In 1989 they looked towards the ’Nizam-i-Ilahi’
(Islamic countries) for establishing the ’Nizam-i-Mustafa’(Rule as per the Islamic tenets)in Kashmir. But neither the Islamic countries barring Pakistan extended any help to the ’Jehad” in Kashmir except lip services nor there was a congenial atmosphere to establish Nizam-i-Mustafa in the vale of rishis, saints and pits which were steeped deeply in secular traditions.
