The United States of America seems to have put an end to its honeymoon with the Asian dragon People’s Republic of China and prefered to adopt Asian tiger India.
The recently concluded Indo-US nuclear deal in India is a pointer towards that development, notwithstanding opposition by some powerful lobbies in the U.S., developed assiduously by China over the years and pro-China Communist Party of India, an ally in the ruling United Progressive Alliance, led by Dr. Manmohan Singh.
* Barring China, all the major countries have hailed the development. China has expressed its concern over the nuclear proliferation. Viewed with the sheer Chinese interest, apprehensions expressed by China are natural. Interestingly, when China entered in the nuclear club, it did not mind proliferation of nuclear club.
* China has become a member of the WTO. It can no longer shut its doors for overseas investors and manufacturers. On account of its cheap labour, prices of the Chinese goods stole the markets in the world. Now, overseas manufacturers can start manufacturing within China and can easily lure away the workforce by paying slightly higher compared to the wages and salaries, offered by Chinese manufacturers.
* The development heralds a new era in which the U.S. lends its whole-hearted support to India in lieu of the reciprocal support to the world’s leader in its war on terrorism (read Islamic terrorism). The decades old marriage between Pakistan, a member of the NATO in Asia and the U.S. sustains only for the sake of records as the Pakistani rulers find the population in their own country hostile to the U.S. Under the circumstances, the U.S. had a choice between the democratic India and authoritarian China. Naturally, it sided with India.
* China has dealt and is dealing with the Muslim minority, in particular in provinces, bordering Gilgit (Pakistan) with a heavy hand while India, with a long record of animosity between the majority Hindu community and the minority Muslim community for centuries, tries to resolve the issue in a democratic manner and without imposing restrictions on the minorities.
* India will have to lobby hard in the U.S. to get the support in the Congress over its pact with India. Little wonder, some American knives are out in Washington. One can understand the hostility of some senators and Congressmen on account of outsourcing of work to India by the U.S. companies. India, on account of a sizeable section of its population well versed with English language is far ahead in netting the outsourcing business. China will have to work hard in this regard.
* Since the bombing of two Japanese cities, nuclear bombs have not been used in the world. Moreover, there is remote possibility of their use by the nuclear powers. Possession of such nuclear arsenal is merely a status symbol for members of the nuclear club. India, Pakistan and China are the countries who have yet to solve their internal problems such as food and shelter etc. for the entire population but the rulers in these countries have rather preferred to have nuclear arsenals than to meet the basis needs and requirements of their subjects.
